A Phrase Cheat Sheet For Energy-Aware Leaders

Communication often comes down to small, deliberate language shifts. These reframes significantly change how a message is received.

Replace pressure-amplifying phrases with precision language:

  • Instead of “This should be easy,” say, “This may be unfamiliar, so let’s walk through it together.”
  • Instead of “We just need to push through,” try, “This is demanding, and here’s how we’ll support the push.”
  • Instead of “Can you do this quickly?” replace it with, “Here’s the timeline and why it matters.”
  • Instead of “No problem,” reframe it to “I see the effort this will take.”
  • Instead of “Let’s circle back later,” be clear by saying, “Here’s when we’ll revisit this and what needs to happen first.”
  • Instead of “I need this done,” soften the urgency with, “This is a priority because…”
